The 10-Step Windshield Replacement Process

There are few things as annoying as a damaged windshield. This type of damage is typically unexpected and can come at the most inconvenient time. If the damage is major then your vehicle is undriveable, which causes you even more annoying problems like not being able to get to work or pick up your children from school.

We can all agree that replacing a windshield is anything but fun, but when you know what to expect, at least the process can be easy. The first step is to learn everything you can about the windshield replacement process. That’s why we created this blog, to help educate owners about windshield replacement.

1. Find an Expert who Offers Both In-Shop and Mobile Services

When you’re looking to replace the windshield on your vehicle, you don’t want to go with just anyone. The auto glass replacement service you hire should have technicians who have a wealth of experience with replacing windshields on all kinds of vehicles, including yours.

It’s also great when the auto glass company offers in-shop replacement services as well as mobile. Each has its benefits, which is why it’s great to find an auto glass service that offers both.

2. Assessment

Once you have chosen a reputable auto glass service, the technician will ask you some questions on the phone. They will ask about the damage, the make and model of your vehicle, and whether it has any Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The technician will be able to tell you whether you need a repair or a full windshield replacement after speaking on the phone.

3. Insurance

If you choose a reputable auto glass company they will have professionals on hand to help you with your insurance claims. This enables you to avoid calling the insurance company yourself and trying to figure out all the paperwork. The professionals at the auto glass service will have a ton of experience with the claims process and they will be more than happy to assist you.

Residents of South Carolina who have comprehensive insurance may be able to have their deductible waived. South Carolina state law says auto insurance companies are required to waive the deductible for auto glass repair and replacement, for those with comprehensive insurance.

4. Get the Vehicle Ready

The auto glass company will get your vehicle ready for replacement. They will do this by protecting both the inside and outside of your vehicle so nothing is damaged during the windshield replacement process.

5. Remove the Old Glass

Now, the tech will remove the old, damaged windshield from the frame with specialized tools. This part of the process is especially delicate so the expert will take great care to be sure all the glass is removed safely.

6. Clean the Frame

Once the old windshield is removed, the technician will clean the old adhesive and any other glass or debris from the frame. If they find any rust or damage they will take care of it then, before they place the new windshield so it doesn’t compromise the integrity of the new windshield.

7. Install the New Windshield

Next, the technician will apply primer to the frame. This helps the adhesive bond. Then they will apply the adhesive or urethane. The technician will then use specialized equipment like suction cups or a mechanical arm to install the new windshield into the frame.

8. ADAS Calibration

If your vehicle has any ADAS technology, this is the point where the technician will calibrate that technology in the new windshield. While some people would like to skip this part of the process, it is not a good idea. A windshield calibration ensures that your safety features are working properly.

9. Time to Cure

Before you drive your vehicle, you have to give the adhesive and new windshield time to cure. This can take a few hours but it’s worth the wait. You don’t want to jostle the new glass because it can compromise the bond between the windshield and the adhesive. Curing allows a true bond to form.

10. Inspection and Clean-Up

Finally, the auto glass technician will inspect their work to make sure everything is in its right place. They will clean up any mess they make if they’re mobile and working at your location. And they will offer you safety suggestions and tips on keeping your new windshield in its best condition.
